RECOMMENDED HEALING HERBS

Bilberry • Cacao • Cayenne • Garlic • Ginkgo • Hawthorn • Hibiscus • Psyllium • Stinging nettle • Tea • Turmeric

HAWTHORN BERRY ELIXIR

Antioxidant, anti-inflammatory hawthorn strengthens and dilates artery walls, increasing blood flow to the heart.

Several servings

WHAT YOU’LL NEED: 1½ cups hawthorn berries

“I like a stronger tincture and sometimes uses up to 3 cups”

1 cup honey (or less as desired) 3 cups brandy or vodka (80 or 90 proof)

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

1. Add the hawthorn berries to a lidded quart jar.

2. Add the desired amount of honey, then add brandy until the berries are completely submerged.
3. Cover the jar and shake well.
4. For the first week, continue to keep the berries fully covered by topping off the alcohol as needed.
5. For the next 3 weeks, shake the jar once a day.
6. Then, strain the berries from the liquid.
7. Pour the elixir into a dark glass bottle with a dropper.
8. Label the bottle with the date, the name of the tincture, and the ingredients. The dark glass bottle allows better storage, and a dropper helps with distribution. Store in a cool place at room temperature.
9. A recommended dosage is 60–90 drops (2–3 droppersful or ½–1 teaspoon), three times a day.
ALTERNATIVE:

For easy hawthorn tea, steep 1 teaspoon of a dried flowers and/or leaves in 1 cup of water for 20–30 minutes three times a day; add honey to taste.

GINKGO LEAF TINCTURE

Ginkgo is antioxidant and also supports blood vessel health.
Several servings
WHAT YOU’LL NEED: ½ cup ginkgo leaf 1 cup 80-proof vodka

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

1. Place the ginkgo leaf in a glass pint jar.

2. Cover the ginkgo leaf completely with the vodka, cap tightly, and shake thoroughly.
3. Place in a dark cupboard at room temperature for 2–4 weeks. Shake daily. Top off with vodka as needed to keep the herbs covered.
4. Strain out the healing herb and pour the tincture into a dark glass bottle with a dropper.
5. Label the bottle with the date, the name of the tincture, and the ingredients. The dark glass bottle allows better storage, and a dropper helps with distribution.
6. One recommended dose is 30–60 drops (1–2 droppersful or ¼–½ teaspoon) mixed into warm tea or water, three times a day.

OTHER:

The American Heart Association recommends filling up on colorful fruits, including raspberries, blueberries, and strawberries, which help lower inflammation and strengthen artery walls. Add them to healing oats to up your herbal intake.
