Healing Herbs for Bad Breath
Herbalists will often look at digestive disorders as cause for bad breath and prescribe carminatives, or gas producing herbs, as well as digestive bitters.
Bad breath healing herbs
Chamomile • Cinnamon • Dandelion • Fennel • Ginger • Lemon balm • Parsley • Peppermint • Tea
CINNAMON LEMON WASH
Cinnamon, a time honored bacterial & bad breath fighter, teams up with lemon, which stimulates salivary glands, and antibacterial manuka honey, which has been shown to be an effective plaque & bad breath reducer.
Several applications of 1–2 tablespoons each
WHAT YOU’LL NEED:
1 cup water, 1½ teaspoons freshly ground cinnamon, 1 teaspoon baking soda, 1 teaspoon manuka honey & 2 small lemons
WHAT YOU’LL DO:
1. Boil the water and set it aside to cool until warm (to melt the honey).
2. Put the cinnamon into a large measuring cup.
3. Mix in the baking soda and honey.
4. Pour the still-warm water over the mixture and stir until dissolved.
5. Fully squeeze both lemons into the liquid and mix thoroughly.
6. Pour the mixture into a glass jar and cap it.
7. After brushing your teeth, swish 1–2 tablespoons of the liquid around your mouth and spit it out promptly.
8. Store in a cool, dark place.
CAUTION: Don’t swallow this! It will stay fresh for 1 week; then make a new batch.
PLEASING PEPPERMINT
Antimicrobial peppermint adds to the effective power of baking soda, which changes acid levels in the mouth and fights bad breath & odors.
Several applications of 1–2 tablespoons each
WHAT YOU’LL NEED:
1 cup water, 5 drops peppermint essential oil & 1 teaspoon baking soda
WHAT YOU’LL DO:
1. Pour all the ingredients into a glass jar or bottle.
2. Tightly cap the container and shake.
3. Use 1–2 tablespoons for a breath refresher. Swish and spit.
CAUTION: Don’t swallow! The batch will stay fresh for a few days, then make a new one.
OTHER: Chewing a handful of antibacterial aniseeds will help tackle bad breath with sweet, spicy bursts of flavor.
